In
1978, casino gambling was introduced in nearby Atlantic City bringing
an abundance of job seekers and their families to the area. At the
same time, Egg Harbor Township was designated a mandated Regional
Growth
Area
by the NJ State Pinelands Commission creating the ‘perfect storm’
of overpopulation in the Township. What was an economic windfall to
the area's hospitality and real estate industries has crippled the
local public school district by adding more than 300 new students per
year with no additional state or federal funding. As a former rural
farming community, the infrastructure of the Township and its schools
were not adequately prepared to handle the growth explosion and the
influx of school-age children that arrived. As a result, class
sizes are dangerously large, academic programs and services are being
dropped by budgetary constraints, and students are falling through
the cracks.
In
order to provide additional resources to Egg Harbor Township Public
Schools, the Community
Partnership for Egg Harbor Township Schools, Inc. hosts
several fundraising events each year, offers District facility Naming
Opportunities, conducts an Annual Fund Drive, and seeks grant
funding to support the current and future educational needs of the
student body.
